PRESTON PERCHE`
Formed in early 2009 in, you guessed it, the northern suburb of Preston, Melbourne, Preston Perche is a vibrant duo blending acoustic folk, soul funk and progressive rock to come up with a truly unique mix of their own. The raw combination of guitar and percussion, with lightheartedly serious lyrics highlights this unique and catchy sound.
As a family the Maes’s moved to Preston in 1990. Parents, Carolyn a classically trained pianist and Andrew, a contemporary artist, encouraged creativity at home. Growing up in Preston, sisters Bianca and Rebecca Maes were surrounded by the multicultural influence of their musical neighbours. From the ages of 3 and 5 the girls were exposed to the likes of Zambian reggae legend Larry Maluma, living 5 doors down. A few years later they were introduced to 90s grunge through Nirvana and Silverchair by a close friend, and spent endless hours head-banging and jumping on beds to the tunes of Veruca Salt and the Offspring. Years of involvement in church bands and events has helped to develop a great ear for music and blending within a band environment.
Bianca Maes picked up her first instrument at 3, but scrapped the violin for guitar at age 7. The Suzuki Method gave her a great grounding for further learning and inspiration. Jazz and blues influences from her guitar teacher also impact the Preston Perche sound. Doing guitar solo performance in VCE Bianca tackled such tunes as Amy by Tommy Emmanuel and Andecy by Andrew York, taking her playing to a whole new level. Bianca has a love for teaching music and encouraging others to have a go, through community jam sessions and private lessons.
Bec Langley, married to Daniel Langley in 2008, also tried her hand at a number of instruments at an early age, but settled on vocals, joining the school choir at the age of 8. In later years she was a member of the choir in two shows with the Plenty Ranges Theatre Company. This experience gave her exposure to singing in harmony in a range of different music styles. In recent years Bec has been involved in recording projects with some friends from Africa, these have not yet been released.
As sisters they played together as a part of the punk band Stray Loop in 2004 to 2006, with Bianca on drums, and Bec on lead vocal. The pair started off performing covers of some of their favourite musos, like Stevie Wonder, Angus & Julia Stone, and Killing Heidi, making the decision to write their own music at the beginning of 2009. The first EP, produced with the help of Steve Vella from Dog & Bear Studios is a five track taste of their recent material. Bianca’s guitar and percussion work are inspired by artists such as the Bamboos, Jose Gonzales, and Cog. Like Julia Stone and Kate Miller-Heidke, Bec’s dynamic vocals have elements of theatre and emotion. Their lyrics reflect life through the ideas of change and human nature. The title track, “Pockets Full of Change”, expresses the uncertainty of being a member of society and the loss of the sense of community within.
The track “I have a Dream”, based on Martin Luther-King Jr.’s famous speech, reveals the reality of such an idea still being so important today.
They played their first St Kilda festival in feb 2010! The duo plays the first Saturday of every month at Cellar & Store in the country town of Heathcote and also for private functions. Future bookings include Basin Fest & supporting Cazi @ The Espy. Other gigs have been at the Noise Bar, Espy, East Brunswick Club, Chase lounge, Bender Bar and Miss Libertine . Preston Perche has supported Bonjah at Pier Live, Pelly Bar.
The EP was launched at Uptown Jazz Café on the 24th of November 2009, with special guests, Charles J Tan and Kieran Ebert.
