BIOGRAPHY
Who: Mechanical Pterodactyl
What: Alternative Rock & Roll (though we all studied jazz so we like to think that comes into it too somehow)
Why: Personal expression, exploration, because we love to rock out
When: The last couple of years together, our whole lives apart
Where: Originally formed in Canberra, now based in Melbourne
How: With guitars, keys, voice, bass, drums and sometimes strings and horns.
Mechanical Pterodactyl joins the rhythm section of hip hop/soul outfit, Casual Projects, with some of Melbourne's finest young jazz musicians to create an original take on Alternative Rock music. Having relocated from Canberra, Mechanical Pterodactyl’s arrival in Melbourne has been noted by performances at the Empress, the Ding Dong Lounge, the Edinburgh Castle, the Public Bar and the Tote amongst others.
Singer and songwriter, Yen Nguyen has recorded and toured throughout Australia with numerous artists such as Casual Projects, Tom Woodward, and Konrad Lenz & the Spirits of the Dead. Of late he has been engineering and producing recordings for The Orphanage and Tom Woodward as well as tracking sessions as a studio drummer at Sing Sing studios. Along with his fellow band mates, Yen graduated from ANU school of music where he studied improvisation, arranging and composition, majoring in Jazz drumming. This versatile musical background brings a deep sense of melody, rhythm and harmony to the songs of Mechanical Pterodactyl, often pairing unusual and disparate influences whilst maintaining a pop aesthetic.
