BIOGRAPHY

The Twoks are a Melbourne-based improvised contemporary music trio featuring Xani Kolac on electric violin and vocals, Mark Leahy on drums and Stewart Taylor on electric bass. The music they create is unclassifiable. Basically, you'd need to go along to a gig to work out what they're all about. Currently, The Twoks find themselves in a nice, little niche beside jazz and improvising musicians, having performed gigs and residencies at Bennett's Lane Jazz Club, the Melbourne Women's International Jazz Festival, the Melbourne Jazz Fringe, the 2008 Melbourne International Arts Festival and this year, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival. However, The Twoks have also played at Revolver, won the Myspace Award for Best Music at the 2008 Adelaide Fringe Festival, launched their debut album at The Toff in Town and their single "Fix It" was featured on the Triple J Unearthed Podcast which makes them kind of indie. According to The Twoks, their music is influenced by Bjork, Camille and Sigur Ros and electronic effects and experimentation and is like a super dose of La Fée Absinth Bohemian where the sounds, texture, and beats are "dark, gothic landscapes" (The Fix) in a blur of electric rock... ...but here is what some other people think: “both in terms of physical presence and musical talent, Xani Kolac on the violin held everyone captivated” (powpowpow.com) “Lively and original, The Twoks’ music has been welcomed in places where people are looking for something a little different…Esoteric instrumental tracks sit beside rollicking, arch pop rumbles and warped ballads in a kind of mystical, dramatic stew.” (Simone Ubaldi, Beat Magazine) "Like guitarist Kaki King, Kolac turns her violin into a percussive instrument and builds up a dense and mystical soundscape through the layering of loops…” (The Fix)
